Propylparaben
A member of the paraben family used to prevent microbial growth in cosmetics. Like methylparaben, it has been reviewed extensively and found safe at the concentrations used in leave-on and rinse-off products.
Parabens circulate online as "hormone disruptors" and a cancer risk, largely from a small, widely criticized 2004 study that found parabens in some breast tumor tissue but did not show they caused the tumors. Major safety bodies, including CIR and the EU SCCS, have reviewed propylparaben and consider it safe at permitted cosmetic use levels; it remains one of the most studied preservative classes in cosmetics.
